Wang LIU, Jiabo ZHANG, Zhen HUANG, Dong HAN

Frontiers in Energy 2019, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 367-376 doi: 10.1007/s11708-018-0584-9

Abstract: It is difficult to predict the ignition delay times for fuels with the two-stage ignition tendency becauseA detailed n-heptane chemical mechanism was used to calculate the fuel ignition delay times in the adiabaticBesides, the ignition delay times predicted by both types of correlations were validated against thoseshowed that both correlations had a satisfactory prediction accuracy in general for the ignition delay timesTherefore, it is concluded that HDMR correlations are capable of predicting the ignition delay times

Rolling-element bearings in China: From ancient times to the 20th century

Lie SUN,Ang LI

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2016, Volume 11, Issue 1,   Pages 33-43 doi: 10.1007/s11465-016-0373-2

Abstract:

The development of rolling-element bearings in China has spanned a long period. Based on several typical and important cases, the present article reconstructs the history of rolling-element bearings in China by dividing it into four stages according to the various characteristics of the bearings. The first stage represents the origin of rolling bearings in China, which remains controversial because of several suspected races and cages that were likely the components of bearings more than a millennium ago. At the second stage, a type of simple roller bearing was used for astronomical instruments not later than the 13th century based on clear philological and physical evidence. A similar bearing was also applied to an abridged armillary in the 17th century. Another type of spherical thrust bearings with rolling elements, which is a key component of a traditional Chinese windmill, could support a rotating shaft that moves rotationally and at an angle. At the third stage, the Chinese began studying and using the so-called European-style bearing since the 17th century. Moreover, over the last 100 years, the modern rolling bearing industry was gradually established in China, particularly because of the technology transfer from the Soviet Union in the 1950s. At the fourth stage, the Chinese government initiated the relatively rapid development of bearing technology. The government launched the “bearing movement” from the 1950s to the 1960s to establish the modern bearing industry and to promote rolling bearings as replacement for traditional sliding bearings. Furthermore, a number of large professional factories and institutions in China have continually introduced advanced technology and equipment. At present, these companies and institutions play a significant role in the international bearing industry.

Tailing and Gangue: The Prosperity Resources Be Recycled

Li Zhangda,Zhou Qiulan

Strategic Study of CAE 2004, Volume 6, Issue 9,   Pages 20-22

Abstract:

There are 8843 state-owned mines of county level and above in China, 2/3 of which has become aged . There are more than 2000 tailing ponds and 1900 coal gangue hills, which reserve 5000 million tons of tailings and 3800 million tons of gangues respectively. They can become new composite mineral materials with the help of the latest technology. Through geological evaluation and experiment study on 4 model mines the authors provide advices as follows: developing mine wastes as building materials and Si-materials; developing gangues as nonmetal materials; geologically evaluating tailings and developing them rationally.

Intermediate HSS bracing members during seismic excitations: modeling, design, and behavior

Madhar HADDAD

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 1,   Pages 148-162 doi: 10.1007/s11709-016-0375-5

Abstract: Concentric hollow structural section (HSS) bracing members are used frequently in steel framed structural systems to resist seismic excitations. Finite element modeling of the HSS braces that utilizes the true stress-strain curves produces hysteresis responses that are reasonable matches to the experimental response. True stress-strain curves are obtained from coupon tests or stub-column tests while utilizing an exponential function or strain hardening rule with a trial and error procedure to obtain the hysteresis behavior. In the current study, the true stress-strain curves are directly obtained from tests on stub-columns extracted from the full scale HSS bracing members away from the mid-length plastic hinge after cyclic testing. Two experimental tests (Shaback 2001 and Haddad 2004) were used to validate the model. Results indicate that the stress-strain curves for these braces are not unique. A refined damage accumulation model for ultra-low-cycle fatigue is implemented to predict fracture of the brace tests. The refined damage model is then used in the finite element modeling to predict fracture of braces in a chevron braced frame of an eight-storey building subjected to selected ground motions analyzed using OpenSees program. Results indicate that all braces could sustain the selected earthquake records without fracture.
